Projection Lighting were specified as it was felt that they could meet energy targets without compromising the store’s brand integrity. Oreb’s energy consumption from lighting in their other stores varied between 115 and 150 watts/m2 , and the task set by Liberty of less than 34 w/m2 had not been achieved by any of their tenants. “AlphaLED achieved an astounding 18.9 w/m2 which was almost 50% lower than newly instituted Liberty Properties standard and 84% less than Oreb’s other stores,” says Gary Heald, Projection Lighting MD. Total payback for the lighting installation was calculated to be around two years. The AlphaLED incorporates the Xicato Spot

Module as a key aspect of the fitting, offering an ideal uniformity with no multiple shadows or colour variations over angle. “LEDs can make considerable cost of ownership advances in the retail arena with no compromise to sustained light quality” believes Roger Sexton, Vice President Marketing and R&D at Xicato. As a result of this, the Xicato Spot Module has been used in a number of recent installations across the world. Sexton believes that LEDs are an ideal option for the retail arena providing they are used correctly; “A sustained and not just initial light quality in terms of high CRI, consistent colour and high lumen maintenance is key. Achieving this is a core advantage of the Corrected Cold Phosphor Technology used in Xicato LED Modules.”

The AlphaLED was also used in a similar installation for a New Look store in Malta,

where excellent colour rendition was a must for lighting designer Oliver Pace. “With many options to choose from, the AlphaLED was singled out as the no-maintenance option without compromise,” says Pace. “It has proven data and thousands of points in retail installations that show virtually zero light depreciation, plus the lifetime consistency in colour that was required. We’re looking at a return on investment of under 2 years and reduced energy bills throughout the life of the installation.”

Now that LEDs have begun to prove themselves in the retail arena, a number of retailers are looking to replace their existing lighting installations with LED. Megaman have recently completed one such replacement rollout programme for clothing company Fat Face, using the GU10 AR111 15W and Candle 5W LED lamps. The refurbishment programme, conducted by Hampshire based Planned Lighting Maintenance Ltd., is part of an ongoing energy saving campaign that has been adopted by Fat Face. The original lighting, which incorporated halogen lamps, had
