New Year Ne w Interior by Valerie Breese W
ith the New Year and all this talk of belt tightening means being creative and not wasting money but spending sensibly and ensuring what you buy is of quality and will last. In 2012, consumers will be looking to British-made
products to furnish their homes, new trends suggest. Major British events such as the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games and the Queen’s Jubilee, have re-ignited people’s love affair with all things British.
This is expected to manifest itself in an increasing propensity for people to employ British themes in their interior design and decorating choices. Furniture is clean and simple with a retro edge with wooden fl oors some with a light grey paint wash, powdery coloured accessories and freshly cut fl owers fi nish the look.
We will be seeing a nostalgic return to days gone by, iconic prints, British tea parties with bunting, freshly cut fl owers, tiered cake stands and vintage style textiles. When it comes to curtains and soft furnishings around the home, the trend is likely to gravitate towards aged textiles in an attempt to recreate the atmosphere of British eras gone by. Spots and ginghams have paved the way for some gorgeous, sugar almond, pastel plains, such as the ranges from Cath Kidston, Nina Campbell and Laura Ashley. With sales underway you can pick up a bargain whether it’s a new sofa, DIY products, wooden fl ooring, or a new kitchen. But if you don’t want to push the boat out there are several ways of revamping a room from simply replacing light fi ttings with a more modern look
or decorating a feature wall with a luxurious wallpaper and as it’s only one wall you can spend a little more. The bathroom could be updated with new taps or blinds or new fl ooring, perhaps under fl oor heating to take away the chill factor fi rst thing in the morning.
The kitchen, which was in great use over the festive season, may look tired and in need of a face lift. Local company, The Kitchen Doctor has specialised for the last 25 years in the supply and fi tting of kitchen doors, kitchen worktops, made to measure any size, sinks, taps and appliances. So if you want to do a complete makeover or simply just spruce up your existing kitchen then they can help. Even replacing your old toaster and kettle with a cheerful red version and some new mugs will welcome in the New Year.
