Having worked as a journalist for quite a few years, I don’t normally feel nervous before I do interviews. However, that is exactly how I felt before I talked with Roger Crouch, who in November of this year won Stonewall’s ‘Hero Of The Year’ award. Roger was awarded the accolade because of the campaigning he has done to highlight the issue of bullying in schools – and in particular, homophobic bullying. He was spurred on to do so after the death of his own son. I’ve never had to interview someone whose child has committed suicide, and I found the prospect daunting. It’s a testament to Mr Crouch that he was able to talk at length to me on the topic of bullying; about his beloved son, Dominic; and about how he feels schools must do more to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the children in their care. He even managed to chuckle with bemusement that he should have beaten Lady Gaga – another Stonewall nominee – to receive the ‘Hero’ award – an honour he had never expected and was astounded to receive. I was shocked when, just a few days after our conversation, I heard the news that Roger had died. It was a privilege to speak to such a remarkable man, and my heart goes out to his wife Paola and daughter Giulia. My condolences to them and all those who knew him. With his wife’s blessing, we are printing our interview with Roger and the story surrounding his campaigning. Check out our feature on page 18. With the dawn of a new year, many of us take stock of our lives and make resolutions about the things we wish to change. It’s easy to dwell upon the bad stuff in life, or the things you wish you could change, but it’s also the perfect time to remind yourself of all the good things. Without wishing to sound trite or clichéd, counting one’s blessings is as good a way to face the New Year as any. However you choose to celebrate it, here’s wishing you all a fantastic 2012.
The next issue of Out In The City hits the streets on 1 February 2012. In the meantime, receive updates by liking our new Out In The City Facebook page or follow us on Twitter.
