Tavistock Youth Café Plus is a parent led voluntary group for young people with Special Needs.
The Café is open on Monday nights from 5pm to 7.30pm to any young person aged 6 to 18 + with an Additional or Special Need /Disability and their parents and carers. The membership is free and children pay a £1 sub on Monday nights. The building is kitted out with a café, table football, snooker/table tennis, computers, internet access, PlayStations/ Nintendo Wii’s. TYCP also organise activities such as trips to the Zoo, outdoor adventure days, cinema trips and swimming sessions.
The TYCP Story
TYCP came about following a Parent Carers Voice meeting in Tavistock in 2007, several parents

suitable out of school activities for their children and someone suggested they talk to the Youth Café in Pixon Lane about using their facilities. Cathy Sharp agreed to do this and Allen and Sheena Lewis put their hands up to help out - the Tavistock Youth Café Plus was born! To start with the group had loads of valuable help and advice from the Youth Workers at Tavistock Youth Café. Then they applied for some start up grants with the help of the Youth network and Allen, an old hand at fundraising for Autism worked hard to raise funds and awareness including sponsorship and the Son-Rise football cup. They formed a committee, wrote a mission statement, a constitution, child
protection policy, set up a website, got business cards, T shirts, and a flag. Cathy says “We have had our challenging moments and it certainly involves a fair amount of commitment and hard work. It’s fantastic to see how our young people have formed good friendships, accepting each other and enjoying just hanging out together. We’ve been on some great days out and had a few
