TAVISTOCK RECYCLED COMPUTERS & TRAINING LTD
Start as Student End as a Friend!
TAVISTOCK Recycled Computers and Training Ltd have now been trading for a full year. The Company is Ltd by Guarantee or a social enterprise. The aim of the Company is to cover their costs, not for profit and to provide the community with a service.
Their shop in Tavistock is a place where people can come to get FREE advice about finding an internet service provider and help buying computer related equipment; where people can ask about a computer or software problem and get the answer FREE. If that’s not enough information they can enrol and enjoy a one-to- one computer lesson at just £15 a lesson or a course of 6 lessons. The lesson fee is subsidised by fundraising efforts in the shop. The Tutor, Janet has been teaching adults now for 15 years and finds that her own experience with dyslexia and illness has given her an empathy and understanding that reassures her that anyone can learn, given the right environment, sufficient reapportion and notes to aid the memory. Janet says, “Age is not a barrier and memory problems can be overcome with patience and perseverance. People who have been students are now friends and to us this is all the
recommendation we need. Come and join us. We do have a waiting list but our 100% success rate means you will not have to wait long for a place.” People from all over Devon and Cornwall have contributed to the project and have donated their unwanted computers, laptops, flat screen monitors, mice, keyboards, phones, webcams, cameras, phones and printers, not to mention an array of leads and connections. Says Janet, “We refurbish and recycle all donations and provide equipment to those who would not normally be able to get on the technology ladder. We can repair

most computers and laptops, plus we guarantee every system. This year we have a growing customer base and we now can provide NEW Laptops and support at very competitive prices.”
During 2011 the Company has sold laptops to visitors from New Zealand, Wales and Wiltshire and have sold cards and gifts as far away as Canada and Germany. The customers are impressed by their efforts to recycle and keep in touch by email. Janet says, “Anne from Canada writes that she cannot wait for her next visit and we will be her first port of call. All our past students keep in touch with us by email and I send out regular updates and advice to ensure computer learning continues - our motto is Start as Student End as a Friend.”
volunteer staff and you can join or help by donating or buying the goods on sale. Janet would like most of all to say a Big ‘Thank You’ to all those who have supported and befriended the Company so far and says “we hope to be of service to many more people in 2012.”
Some people have found the shop hard to find, mainly because when the weather is fine there is an outside display of bespoke cards and gifts which are sold to help with fundraising. Janet explains, “this can make us look like a card shop but come closer and take a look into our window and it is plain to see that we sell all computer related items.”
