TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones

Ever thought about creating an iTunes account for a younger member of the family to separate them from yours, but did not want them to have a

credit card connected to it? I wanted to recently so that my son could get the artwork to download in itunes and found the only way to do so was from the app store in an iPad or similar. Download a free app and choose “none” at the payment stage and then an account can be created, but you will need to lie about their age as 13 is the minimum required.

We have been to a lot of homes recently where we have needed to take a spare micro-filter because the complaint was that the internet was unreliable and slow. Do remember that if you add a telephone or Sky TV (which is contractually connected to a socket), that you really do need to remember to check that you add a micro-filter too. The whole system relies on their presence and it always works much better when we add one.

If your machine is running slow, then a RAM upgrade will always be the best thing that can be done to any machine, and we can advise. But if you are not ready for that, then a good clean out using a suitable program will always pay dividends. We use Ccleaner (filehippo.com) and it is easy to use, but be careful of ticking additional boxes without advice. Be careful also of

looking for programs such as this on the internet without knowing what you are asking for, as we get lots of infected

computers from just this sort of searching.

One reason a lot of people’s computers are running poorly is because they have stayed with the same anti-virus program that was loaded on their computer when it was first bought. Or, even worse, it has been upgraded to a more “secure” version and the machine is now labouring as a result. If your computer has 512mb of RAM or less, then you really need to remove the paid for powerful AV and load AVG or Avast which are less effective, but will allow you to use you computer without wishing to murder the manufacturer or the poor individual that sold it to you.

Thinking of getting a website or personal email address? 1and1 hosting is doing a lot of advertising and they are fine as a reasonable way of starting out. However, if you are going to have more than a modest amount of email addresses (ie more than 5), or any sophistication at all, then it would be a decision you might regret later. Better to go to a company that you can talk to about what you need, so you won’t have any surprises later - we would suggest DV8 media in Plymouth.
