New Year, New Confidence,

SHORTLY it will be coming round to that time of year where many of us will make a New Year’s resolution and for some that resolution may well be to take steps to improve our fitness, health and wellbeing. Many women are put off by the idea of joining a gym for a myriad of reasons, but often find that Curves fitness and weight management facilities are able to overcome many of these issues offering a fun, friendly and supportive environment in which to achieve your goals. Pam and Pat, current members of

the Tavistock branch, have both worked very hard to change their lives and hope by sharing their stories others will also be inspired to take that first step to making a change. Pam joined Curves January 2009 after a recommendation from a friend. Pam had already started to lose weight through following a healthy eating plan, but knew dieting alone would not be enough to reach her long-term goal. Pam suffers from arthritis in both her hips and knees so losing weight was paramount to improving her quality of life. Since joining Pam has lost an amazing five and a half stone and her life has been transformed. Pam no longer requires her walking stick; she is back walking the dogs and is finding exercise increasingly easier. ‘By exercising at Curves 3 times a week I have lost weight steadily and it keeps me in shape which is very important when you lose so much weight. My weight, body fat and blood pressure is monitored monthly, it is great to be able to see how I’m getting on and helps to keep me on track. Sometimes it feels like an effort to go to the gym, but after I’ve done my workout I’m glad I put in the effort. I really enjoy ‘Zumba in the Circuit’ sessions once or twice a week, it’s great fun and if I get a move wrong I just laugh. The staff are friendly and I like the fact they

Pat (aged 74) looked like she was increasingly in need of a knee replacement due to arthritis On some days she would need to use a walking stick because of the pain and pressure on her joint, however due to other health issues at the time the consultant was not keen to operate, instead he advised Pat to attempt to lose two stone which he felt would greatly reduce the pain in her knee. Determined to lose the weight and help herself Pat joined Curves in April 2011. Working out regularly in addition to following a healthy eating plan meant that by November Pat had lost nearly two stone!

success and told her she’s a model patient and there is no need to operate! The reduced pressure on the knee coupled with strengthening the muscles around the joint has resulted in less discomfort for Pam and no need for the stick.

Curves, the camaraderie in the club is great. All the members are friendly and we encourage each other when working out, the staff are excellent. I now find everyday life much easier, before I lost the weight I was in pain and struggled at home, I didn’t want to be a burden to the family. Now I know with determination and hard work I can look after myself’.
