Popular puppets post new productions Soaring, hand painted arches frame the


entry to the magical world of imagination that is the Great Arizona Puppet Theater, a mecca of Arizona marionettes housed in a restored historic building at 302 W. Latham St. in Phoenix, across from the Margaret T. Hance Park. The fi rst quarter show line up for 2012 is apropos of the theatre’s illustrious surroundings.


First up is “The Princess, The Unicorn and the Smelly Foot Troll,” which opens Dec. 28 and runs through Jan. 15, 2012. This premiere of an original show has singing, sparkling, and smelly foot hilarity suitable for preschoolers and older. The next offering allows for the royal treatment Jan. 18 to Feb. 12 when a beautiful

girl, a wicked step-family, a fairy godmother, a handsome prince and transparent footwear all add up to true love and laughter in “Cinderella.” A recipient of the UNIMA- USA Citation for Excellence in Puppetry, this version of the famous fairy tale is performed with elegant hand puppets in a show written by Nancy Smith and Laura Bonar and directed by Smith.


On Feb. 12, young princes and princesses may join in dancing and activities with Cinderella, the Prince, and the Fairy Godmother at “Cinderella’s Ball.” Attendees, encouraged to dress in their own royal fi nery, can play themed games, experience puppet making and a puppet parade. The

show starts at 2 p.m. and the ball is at 3. Tickets for $10 include both show and ball or $5 tickets are available for the ball only.


Next the theatre goes from castles to cacti Feb. 15 through 26 when kindergarteners and older will enjoy “Hotel Saguaro” in which Sammy, the young saguaro, learns with his grandpa’s help how important he is to the desert. Finally announced for Feb. 29 through March 4 is the award-winning show by Paul Mesner Puppets, “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs,” based on the book by John Scieszka. This show is also appropriate for preschool ages and helps clear up a few of the misunderstandings about the porcine character and the historical defamation of wolves.
