Cool music heats up historic Chandler
There is a lot to get jazzed about this winter in downtown Chandler as two local eateries complement their menus with live music.
On Saturday nights, jazz accompanies an all-you-can-eat prime rib dinner at AJ’s Café and 1912 Lounge at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf. Jazz vocalist Laurie Fagen performs with Frank Smith on Sat., Dec. 17 and the Vandal-Hancock jazz guitar duo entertains Sat., Dec. 24. Jazz afi cionados may also see the New Year in from 8 p.m. to midnight Sat., Dec. 31 at AJ’s Café with Fagen, pianist Beth Lederman and drummer Emerson Laffey. The San Marcos is at 1 N. It’s all about cool jazz and hot Italian food on Sunday’s at La Stalla in downtown Chandler. The Vandal Hancock Duo performs Sun., Dec. 18, and then it’s back to second and fourth Sundays in January. Vandal Hancock Duo makes the music fl ow on Sun., Jan. 8 and Laurie Fagen croons while Frank Smith tinkles the ivory on Sun., Jan. 22. La Stalla is at 68 W. Youths illuminate with song
Light fi gures centrally in many midwinter traditions as colorful Christmas bulbs twinkle on homes and trees, logs roar in fi replaces and candles on Menorahs progress nightly from one to seven symbolic fl ames.
The Chandler Children’s Choir will celebrate the many ways to make this holiday season glow in “The Lights of December” at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 to 17. Performing at the First United Methodist Church, 15 E. First Ave., Mesa, the concert features three separate choirs: the Junior Choir, the Encore Choir and the Cantus Choir, and also features the Chamber Choir, a small group of a cappella singers.
Then as their third season continues into 2012, the Chandler Children’s Choir will be holding auditions Jan. 6 to 7. Now that basketball is back in the game, the choir will also be performing at the Phoenix Suns game Jan. 31.

The 2012 AZ Chinese New Year Festival, a cultural cornucopia of entertainment, celebrates Chinese New Year at Chandler Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. Sat., Jan. 21, 2012, when the Eastern Art Academy and Arizona State University Confucius Institute take the audience on a performing arts journey through China.
The variety show emphasizes traditional Chinese dance acts, weaves in martial arts, instrumental and vocal performances of Chinese music, and showcases diverse customs and arts styles from different Chinese ethnic groups through unique costumes. talented young dancers from the Eastern Art Academy, include fi rst time dancing 4-year-olds to professional level dancers in solos, duets, trios and groups. A co-presenter of 2012 AZ Chinese New Year Festival, Eastern Art Academy is a Chandler art organization that provides “focused, high-standard Chinese arts and cultural training programs for youth and adults including Chinese Dance Series, Fine Arts, Martial arts, Tai Chi, Traditional Chinese Painting, Bilingual Language Program and more.”
Other presenting organizations on the 21st include Tucson Sino Choir and American Western Chinese Post. The event supported by the Chinese United Association of Greater Phoenix, Chinese Culture Association, Arizona Chinese United Association, Contemporary Chinese School of Arizona and Hope Chinese School.
