www.SanTanSun.com Police academy accepting apps
A new class begins at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Law Enforcement Training Academy on Jan. 7, 2012 at the college’s Williams Campus. The CGCC Law Enforcement Training Academy is a certified police academy covering more than 870 hours of training required by the Arizona Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (Az POST). The course is also appropriate for those currently serving as reserve officers, or in non-sworn positions within police agencies who need certification but are not available to attend a full-time state sponsored academy. Students attend the academy on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and all day on Saturday for 10 months. Upon successful completion of the Academy and the Az POST Board’s Comprehensive Exam, students are eligible to be certified law enforcement officers once appointed by an Arizona law enforcement agency. In addition, students earn 30 college credits from CGCC.
Students may be sponsored by a law enforcement agency, or enroll as non- sponsored, open enrollees. The application process includes an Az POST background check, lie-detector, and medical exam prior to being admitted to the academy. Students are encouraged begin the application process as soon as possible in order to enroll in the January 2012 class.
Anyone interested in admissions should contact Program Coordinator Jonathan Terpay at 480-988-8756, or

IRS to return $4.5 million to residents
In an annual reminder to taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service says it is looking to return more than $4.5 million to Arizona taxpayers in undelivered tax refund checks, some of which may belong to SanTan Sun area residents. In all, 2,659 Arizona taxpayers are due refunds, with the average check totaling $1,547. Nationwide, 99,123 taxpayers are due refund checks this year that could not be delivered because of mailing address errors. The IRS recommends filing tax returns electronically and choosing direct deposit of refunds to eliminate the risk of lost paper returns and speed up the refund process.
Taxpayers who believe a refund check may have been returned to the IRS can check via the “Where’s my refund?” tool on the
www.IRS.gov website, or by calling 800-829-1954.

Dec. 17, 2011 - Jan. 6, 2012 Ostomy Clinic opens
The southeast Valley’s first ostomy clinic is open to help provide relief for patients with an ostomy, a surgically created opening in the body for the discharge of body wastes.
The Chandler Regional Medical Center Ostomy clinic provides comprehensive care, education and support from nationally certified and specially trained Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOCN) who can help patients effectively manage ostomies and return to normal life.
In the United States, more than 75,000 people each year undergo surgery resulting in an ostomy, often relieving or curing the symptoms of a disease or condition adversely affecting the digestive or urinary tract system.
“Working with a WOCN will improve patient comfort level and reduce complications,” says Patty White, president and CEO of Chandler Regional Medical Center. She notes that optimal care and management can lead to better medical outcomes, faster recovery and a faster return to normal activities.
“We knew there was a need in the southeast Valley for ostomy support services, so we put a team of experts in place to create this program.”
The clinic, located on Chandler Regional’s campus in the Morrison Building at 1875 W. Frye Rd., will be open Monday through Friday based on specific patients’ needs. Patients may be referred by primary care doctors or surgeons and must call 480-728- 3836 to make an appointment.
