Airport Dayz, a weekend of aviation fun featuring a variety of aircraft, informational booths, vendors, food and live music, also took shape in April at Chandler Municipal Airport. Chandler Airport Dayz was organized by Chandler Air Service and the Chandler Airport Alliance to honor America’s war veterans and provide an opportunity for the public to visit Chandler’s airport and learn more about its businesses and the local aviation community. In addition, a new website and video of Chandler’s airport history debuted.

The community scored big with another important event in May: a friendly food drive challenge between Chandler and Gilbert. The two cities teamed up for a challenge of a giving nature, seeking to collect the largest quantity of donations for local food banks.

The goal was to collect the greatest weight of food donations, in a fun contest between residents and

employees of Chandler and Gilbert to support their respective communities. The winning community was to provide T-shirts for the losing community’s city council to wear at a meeting. Chandler took home bragging rights by raising about 2,500 more pounds than Gilbert, but both communities benefi tted with 9,598 pounds of food for the hungry. The real winners were the local food banks, with the donations distributed to United Food Bank, Chandler Christian Center and Matthews Crossing.

June

A key celebration was in order in June, as it marked Chandler’s one-year anniversary as an All-America City. On June 18, 2010, the National Civic League chose Chandler as one of 10 winners of

the All-America City award. That was the day Chandler proved worthy of the country’s most prestigious community award, in recognition of the City’s ability to address serious challenges with innovative, inclusive and collaborative efforts that promote civic engagement. It was the fi rst time Chandler earned All-America City honors, and it is a designation that remains with the community in perpetuity.

July

The City participated in a vital outreach effort in July to help provide key services to community members who were experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness. Project Connect was an opportunity to offer instant access to driver’s licenses, employment services, wellness checks, showers, haircuts, clothing, meals, counseling, substance abuse services, foreclosure prevention information, connections to housing and many other health and human services. It is part of Valley of the Sun United Way’s broader community work to end homelessness in Maricopa County.
