.................................................................................................................................................... Dear Erick,

Should I make a seasonal change in my hair color, and if so, how can I keep my hair healthy? Thanks, Samantha

Hi Samantha,

I like your question, and it is right-in-line with this issue of Pulse Magazine SWFL and with the winter season. First of all, yes, if you can make a seasonal change to your hair color you should. It tells people that you’re stylish and fashion-forward. Seasons have always had a big impact on hair color trends.

Now let’s talk about how we can do this. In the summer, we find that shades of blonde work well for more than one reason. As warmer weather permits more outdoor activities, our hair gets lightened naturally by the sun. Also, the clothes we wear tend to be brighter and are complemented by lighter hair and tan skin.

In the winter, apparel trends towards darker and more jewel-toned shades which look better against darker, richer hair color. Even Florida residents tend to spend less time in the sun because of the time change. So hair color doesn’t fade out as much and we’re typically not as tan… of course, Zoom Tan can change that in a matter of minutes!

Considering all of the above factors, a more striking contrast is offered with darker, richer hair color. As a side note, we are also seeing a seasonal change in nails – the typical French manicure during the summer months has been replaced by the tuxedo manicure in the winter, along with richer, solid nail colors.

Keep in mind that all seasonal changes to hair color should be subtle, especially if you plan to change back for the summer months. A consultation with your stylist is key and will save you from dealing with damaged hair and other “do it yourself” disasters. I always tell my clients that if they want to make a seasonal change, make sure to leave an exit strategy in place – in other words, a way to go back to summer blonde, if desired.

When it comes to your look and personal style, I believe change is positive and can be a lot of fun. If done right, changing your hair color can be just what you need to mix things up! – Erick Carter
