PULSE / Health Hypnosis is really about tapping into the desire

already present in the subject to facilitate healing changes in the self. This theme is also present in Reiki, another one of Nelson’s healing modalities. Reiki uses the universal and bodily energy al-

ready present in an individual to promote physical health and healing. It differs from more traditional massage in that the recipient is fully clothed, and the practitioner rarely makes physical contact with the body. “You don’t have to be a shaman or a psy- chic,” Nelson explains.“The healing energy is always there.” The Reiki practitioner will draw the universal energy down and compress it into their hands. They will then hold their hands over any part of the subject’s body that is experiencing pain. Most recipients will notice a sensation of heat or a prickly sensation as they receive the energy, and many are surprised at how much better they feel. Reiki can also be practiced on animals or children to create an all-over sense of well being. Very often, it’s one’s own critical judgment that

blocks acceptance of this healing treatment. If something sounds too “out there,” then it can’t pos- sibly be real. Nelson counters with the thought, “It wasn’t that long ago that society didn’t believe in the existence of bacteria or atoms. If we couldn’t see it, it wasn’t real. Now modern science has proved this concept to be untrue.” Hypnosis heals the mind, and Reiki heals the

Hypnosis - Smudging

Written by: Jamie Shane Freeman

“The mind is extremely powerful. There is so much more than what we see around us,” says Deborah Nelson, owner of Journey Hypnosis and Silver Eagle in Naples.

“Hypnosis has been accepted by the American Medical Association since 1958,

but some people still remain skeptical.” This practical science works by creating an in- crease in focused attention and a decrease in peripheral awareness.Contrary to popu- lar belief, it does not put you to sleep, or mine the sub-conscious. Rather, it creates a super-conscious internal awareness that allows all of your mind’s chatter to temporar- ily subside. When this happens, attention becomes so focused that real changes can be made to achieve a goal. Many people use hypnosis to break addictions, control habits, lose weight, quit

smoking, or manage fears and phobias. It can also be used to manage pain or to in- crease sports performance. These goals can often be achieved in just one or two hyp- nosis sessions. “It’s such a wide field; there is so much you can do,” says Nelson.A new trend in hypnosis is hypno-birthing, which puts laboring mothers into a state of such focus that they are able to manage the pain with less need for drugs. A common fear that people have of hypnosis is that there will be a loss of control

once they reach the hypnotic state. It’s this illusion of vulnerability that deters many individuals. “There is absolutely no loss of control,” Nelson assures. “It’s possible to open your eyes at any time.We cannot make a person do anything that they wouldn’t normally do with good judgment and they are completely aware of their actions while hypnotized. Everything that guards you is still in place.”

body. Nelson also offers smudging, a Native American technique, to heal the space we occupy. Smudging utilizes burning herbs, usually sage or sweet grass, to clear and cleanse our spaces of ‘negative’ energy. It is a symbolic reclaiming of our psyche; a time to put oneself into harmony with our environment. “Put yourself into a state where you are clear

about what you want,” Nelson says. You then smudge each room, giving it a purpose and a bless- ing. Smudging windows and doors is thought to seal the openings from harm, preventing any nega- tivity from entering. This ritual soothes not only the space, but the individual as well. Once the smudging is complete, the lingering

scent will continue to remind you of that powerful mindset and harmony as your subconscious draws associations between the smell and the blessings you created. In this way, the ancient practice of smudging can be a powerful healing tool. There are many paths to healing and the suc-

cess of most is dependant upon the collaboration between the practitioner and the receiver. These modalities succeed because the desire to heal the mind, the body and the space is already present within. It is a powerful force that starts inside. “We are all amazed at how well hypnosis, Reiki,

and smudging work,” Nelson concludes. “Helping a client succeed, overcome obstacles and reach their goals is very rewarding.”
