seasonal breaks
Many people consider Christmas to be the one time of year when you stay at home for the celebrations. However, there is a growing school of thought that advocates going away for the winter holiday, and this year, a Christmas, or a combined Christmas and New Year holiday, could be the ideal gift for yourself and family. There are several choices open to the Christmas traveller. First however, one must decide whether the holiday is to be in the UK or abroad. In Britain, even the many hotels that close during the winter season, frequently open for Christmas. Special entertainments are put on along with equally spe- cial catering. Generally, bookings can cover Christmas Eve through to New Year’s Day, and into the new year, and will include several evening functions as well as normal board and seasonal foods. Because Christmas is as much for children as for adults, kiddies are usually well catered for at these times, and if the hotel includes a ‘nanny’ or baby-minding service, there is ample opportunity for par- ents to get out on their own, from time to time to join the evening festivities. Overseas, broadly similar arrangements apply, though of course, flight or ferry arrangements are normally included in the holiday package. If you do go abroad, you may have a choice of a traditional British Christmas and New Year celebration, or one that is purely local. Or you may find you have the choice of a ‘mix and match’ vacation where you can experience the unfamiliar customs of the country in which you are staying, whilst at the same time, being sure of the familiarly traditional celebrations you would expect to come across at home.
Again, many European hotels are happy to cater for children and provide some ‘listening’ services. It is however wise to make sure of this in advance, before you make your booking. Of course you can ignore the fact of Christmas if you wish. Some tour companies put on special winter tours that cover a number of countries and deal with Christmas as it comes along. These can be very happy experiences as there is always an element of surprise and the unexpected. Many people head for winter sports around Christmas. Some years in the past, the weather has simply not been cold enough to produce the ideal skiing con- ditions. If you are not prepared to take the risk, you may be better advised to look further afield than the traditional European winter sports centres. North- ern Scandinavia can usually be relied upon to provide the right conditions as can parts of North American and Canada. Obviously these further-flung centres are rather more expensive, but there are good value packages on offer as well as some fairly special, ‘bargain’ deals. You may want to escape from winter weather of course. Some people prefer the sun at any time. How about a Christmas cruise, perhaps in the Caribbean? It could include trips to see the rain forests in South America, the Inca ruins in Peru or the Aztec remains in Mexico. You could the whole hog, head for Australia or New Zealand and enjoy a Christmas barbie on some idyllic beach? With Aus- tralia only just over a day away by plane, it is now well within reach of even the least intrepid holiday maker. Now, during the weeks leading up to Christmas, you will find many UK hotels putting on ‘Tinsel and Turkey’ events - in effect Christmas being celebrated early. And what fun they can be! This year, if Christmas at home is beginning to pall, think seriously about a sea- sonal holiday break. It could set you up for the challenges of the New Year!
