Cracker ART
IF YOUare looking for an original gift for someone you love or have decided to buy something special for your own home this Christmas then a work of art may be the answer.
Art galleries can be intimidating places for the uniniti- ated but the local galleries are used to dealing with all sorts of customers, from those who want to browse to regular, discerning collec- tors. And many galleries are not filled solely with paintings or sculptures. Nowadays items made by dedicated craftspeople with high standards of skill can be found sharing space alongside the more traditional oils or water- colours. Hand crafted pieces of jewellery, carved wooden bowls and delicate
scarves which have been hand died, spun or woven, all make beautiful, and thoughtful gifts.
Shopping for art is like shopping for any other product, you can find it for sale at lots of different places and at varying prices. It is a good idea to visit several galleries or art studios to discover what style you particularly like. If you are buying a piece for yourself you may be hoping that it will increase in value but it is far more important to ask ‘do I love this piece, can I live with it?’ If you fall in love with a piece that’s comfortably affordable, and you don’t think you will ever need to resell it, then its value to you is all that matters.

There are a few things to remember before starting to look, how much space do you have, does it need to fit with an existing colour scheme or style and set your budget. If you are buying a piece as a gift remember a person is far more likely to appreciate a smaller piece of original art rather than a larger cheap piece. Size does not always matter when it comes to original art. And if you are spending a substantial sum you can always ask the intended recipient for their thoughts. This can be done discreetly or directly, depending on how much of a surprise you want the gift of original art to be. Sometimes, it is better to check that it is what they want, rather than buy the wrong gift. Remember many local artists, studios and galleries are taking part in the
h.Art Christmas Weekend on December 3rd and 4th. Many of the
h.Art 2011 venues will once again be displaying their
h.Art
signs and opening their studios for a Christmas Shopping Weekend. Look for the Christmas Tree symbol.
