Although Christmas might seem the ideal time to buy a pet they
are not usually appropriate gifts during the holiday season. The holidays are full of excitement, children are wound up with expectation and parents are stressed with shopping, company, and dealing with the children. A live animal that needs lots of looking after does not fit with this. Children especially will fuss over a new puppy, kitten or other pet for a few days, but what then? The care of the pet often falls to a parent who already has their hands full and can become resentful of the extra work. Young children turn to their other toys, and tend to forget that their live ‘toy’, needs food, attention, and in the case of puppies, frequent trips outdoors. Before getting a pet at any time of the year, the family as a whole needs to take into account the work involved. Pets are a lifetime commit- ment. When we purchase one, we should be prepared to care for it for the whole of its life. This is a big committment
and probably too
much for most people at this time of year.
