Banish Christmas Stress
THERE are many reasons for the stresses experienced at Christmas. Some of course are caused by the very ʻtogethernessʼ of the season. People are having to come to terms with being closer to their families than they are accustomed to being. There is little that can be done to alleviate this other than to be as fit and healthy as possible. If you are at all under par, life gets on top of you, you get things out of proportion and problems rise up where problems have no right to be. Other stresses however, those caused by the pressures of extra work, organising the celebrations, coping with over-excited children, etc., can be helped. And in the course of helping these, the sufferer will find him or herself better able to cope with the other, less obvious strains.
Physical unfitness is at the base root of stress, so getting into good shape is an important aim. You have many choices open to you - jogging alone night and morning, joining a keep fit, dance or Aerobics class, enrolling into a health club, or becoming involved in some form of sport. They will all help towards that ultimate goal of muscular tone and control that provides those smoothly operating joints and that lightness of step that are the outward signs of fitness. You need not be so energetic however, disciplines like yoga have very cathartic effects on both physical and mental fitness. The inner calmness and peace promoted by yoga exercises do all this, and will also eventually help on a more outwardly physical plane. Weight is important of course. If you are overweight, your body is having to cope with the extra stresses of just getting you around. If you lose even a little weight, you will feel immeasurably better all round. Just as important however, is eating the right balance of foods. Have a word with your doctor about diet. Donʼt try to lose too much at once, it will merely exhaust you. Also, weight lost too quickly is just as quickly replaced. A slow, steady regime of calorie control, over a period of time will do the trick. If you have enrolled into a health club, you will reap extra
benefits. If your fitness supervisor knows you are on a diet, he or she will formulate a plan of exercises to keep the relevant muscles in tone. This is quite important if you donʼt want your skin to look loose and flabby. And the older you are when you lose weight, the more likely this is to happen if youʼre not careful. Take time off for yourself each day. If you have a busy schedule, look upon your own time for relaxation as part of the working day. Make it
sacrosanct. Ensure your family - especially your children, friends and colleagues, understand you cannot be disturbed during this time, unless for dire emergencies. Try to find a darkened room, use a relaxation tape playing softly in the background or a recording of soft, undemanding music. There you will have peace to do your exercises, meditate, breathe deeply, or just relax and do as you will. The effect will soon begin to show, when you will not only look great, you will find ʻproblemsʼ melting away, stresses less painful and strains much easier to cope with. In short, youʼll be fit enough to take on all- comers as well as the celebrations of Christmas.
