Caring for a
real tree I
Christmas Trees
If you are planning on getting a real tree this year then you might want to get one which has been grown locally. At Taurus Crafts Christmas trees which have been grown on Lydney Park Estate by a team of experienced professional foresters will be available from the beginning of December. High quality, well shaped trees will be available at different heights. Prices are reasonable and the carbon footprint couldn’t be less, as they are grown under one mile away from Taurus Crafts. The trees are felled as freshly as possible which greatly improves their needle retention properties.
f you are buying a fresh, cut tree you need to make sure it’s from a reliable place to guarantee that your tree keeps its needles right up to Christmas Day. If trees have been cut too early and then netted and left to lie around stacked on top of each other-then they will suffer from lack of air circulating around the needles-and lack of water. Some trees which have been frozen may "shatter" ie lose all their needles as soon as they are introduced to a change in temperature indoors-so beware! Check that the trees look fresh and healthy green-not pale and that the branches are firm and the needles are strong and supple. Cut trees will continue to take up water long after they are cut, providing you
make a fresh cut at the bottom of the trunk as you would with fresh flowers. Alison at Ross Garden Store has compiled a few tips to ensure that your tree looks good as long as you want it too.

CUT • Re - cut about 3"/7 cms off the base of the trunk. • Stand upright in a water reservoir, this can be a specialist Christmas tree stand or a bucket.
• Keep the reservoir topped up with water at all times. • Your tree will last longer if kept cool and away from open fires/radiators. • Spray branches with “Needlefast” for extra protection against needledrop.
POTTED • For best results drop the pot into a large water holding container or saucer and keep the soil moist
• Keep the tree as cool as possible • Plant out into the garden in the spring, or pot up using John Innes compost and keep well watered and fed until next Christmas. Alison added: “Frazer Fir, Nordman Fir and Blue Spruce varieties hold their needles longer than the traditional tree, the Norway Spruce. The non- needledrop type that are now the most popular are the Nordman Firs. However all will hold their needles well if you follow the guidelines!”
