SUSTAINABLE NEWS & PRODUCTS SAVortex was established in 2006, with
an aim to touch, move and inspire. The company aims to not only produce energy efficient sustainable products, but also to have a green supply chain which involves design, supply and manufacture. SAVortex prides itself on being a British
company who manufactures in Britain. We sat down with founder Syed Ahmed (left) to chat about SAVortex’s ethos and their impressive work on the new dryer.
Q
So what made a hand dryer the first task for SAVortex?
SAVortex Syed speaks
As a special interview to kick off our green building supplement, we have spoken to SAVortex, the technology company who specialise in improving the energy efficiency of everyday technological items. They have started with the humble hand dryer, which was in research and development for an impressive four and a half years. The result is the Vortex 550, which, according to the company, is tested to a million hand dries and costs just a penny for fifty of them.
We saw an opportunity to innovate a product that had so much market potential but the technology used was seriously outdated. By removing environmentally unfriendly and un-economical heating elements, we improved the energy efficiency by up to 94 per cent and we increased the life by at least ten times. We also set out to improve hygiene by removing brushed motors, and this was all achieved without compromising on performance. Our aim was to eliminate hidden costs and highlight the true cost of ownership of a hand dryer. The main issue with making the dryer more energy efficient was to do with removing the heating elements and the brushed motors.

What was the hardest aspect of 're-imagining' the hand dryer?
Reducing the energy and still managing to dry hands in 10 to 15 seconds. It was also believing in what seemed to be the impossible and succeeding.
Q Q
How can this dryer benefit developers looking to put them
in their developments? It’s energy efficient, sustainable, and easy to install. It’s also robust, safe, quiet and sleek. It can also be used in retrofit due to our easy fitting system.
What's been your biggest barrier with getting the dryer
specified? We have been very successful with specifications. Emcor and Balfour Beatty have both tested our units and are impressed with the performance and all its unique features.
Q
Are there any developments with the dryer coming up soon
that are particularly useful for the building and developing market? Our most recent brushless bypass motor technology means our motor has a long life and is safe guarded against water ingress, hence it can be mounted over a sink to save space amongst other unique benefits.
