Green award for VEKA
VEKA has won a major environmental award for its highly-acclaimed Infinity recycled profile system. The accolade came from the Lancashire Telegraph newspaper after the system supplier beat off competition from all over the county before an audience of nearly 300 of the region’s business community. Infinity has already helped VEKA to achieve a number of UK recycling milestones, including first major social housing contract, first commitment by a local authority and first private house retrofit, as well as, according to the company, earning the praise of customers in all sectors. The fully-integrated system uses advanced co-extrusion technology to ensure all exterior surfaces are virgin polymer while still using up to 80 per cent recycled PVC-U. According to VEKA, the result takes less than a quarter of the natural resources and has only a third the carbon footprint compared with conventional material. The company also received commendations in two other categories – for ‘training and development’ and ‘social & community’. For more information call 01282 716611, email

Blending beautifully
IKO PLC’s single ply division has provided a new ‘brown roof’ on a house in the Scottish Borders. Plummerswood is a new private dwelling on a site overlooking the River Tweed. It has been designed to last 100 years and takes into account the requirements of future generations of the family. The house is the first to be constructed in the UK with zero heating requirements using the mass timber Brettstapel technique. Passive technologies such as orientation for daylight and solar gain, super insulation and air-tightness levels have been utilised in order to achieve the internationally recognised Passivhaus standard. For the main flat roof area, IKO’s UK manufactured Spectraplan TPE SG120 Light Grey single ply membrane was installed. Gaia Architects specified Spectraplan on the basis that Spectraplan TPE membranes are free of halogens (chlorine, fluorine, bromine and iodine), softeners, (H)CFCs and heavy metal. Finally for the top layer of the roof, the client had reclaimed the site soil as the growing substrate, and the IKOgreen Biodiverse roofing system comprising Plasfeed 5+1, and IKO Filter Fleece were installed. Improved thermal conductivity
Specifiers and contractors selecting STYROFOAM-A insulation from Dow Building Solutions will benefit from improved thermal conductivity across the product range thanks to the latest in a long history of manufacturing improvements. Thermal conductivity of STYROFOAM-A - which includes ROOFMATE-A, FLOORMATE-A and PERIMATE DI-A products – has been improved by 0.002W/mK, enabling the construction industry to achieve lower U-values from the same thicknesses. For example FLOORMATE 300-A – which has seen a recent boom in below-slab residential applications - now offers improved thermal conductivity of 0.033W/mK compared to a previous 0.035W/mK in a 75mm thickness. “We’re very proud of STYROFOAM’s long history,” said Jayne Law, UK and Ireland sales manager for Dow Building Solutions. “Over the years we’ve always responded to market needs and legislative demands by continuing to make advances in the technical capabilities of STYROFOAM.” For more information call 020 3139 4190, email
