INDOOR ROUNDUP
Jeni Longley Sue Skeggs Strongest was the novice pony class with
nine fi nishers. Best score of the day was Chloe Rogers’, 153.9 penalties; however Kerry Whiteman came back from 10 points down, driving strongly with speedy obstacles to a close second place. Marisa Pinnock was third and Chloe’s mother, Nicola, fourth, which was exciting to watch. Open pony drivers enjoyed an equally
gripping contest, with Susan Skeggs driving Pip Holgate’s coloured pony taking an early lead, father Dave backstepping; hotly pursued by Jeni Longley; Philippa Ellen with her Shetland, and Leonie Marshall (Sara Howe’s mother), husband Barry grooming. Susan stayed in front with the fastest obstacle times of the day. Bob Cox took the open horse class from Tony Green then Tanya Jupp. Geraldine Stephenson took off the brakes
chasing Sara Howe’s pony pair, Pat Sowerby hanging on tight, to fi nish just one penalty behind; followed by Sarah Owlett’s lively chestnuts. Tina Graham’s pony tandem was fourth: isn’t tandem driving hard enough without having a leader with one eye? Anne Chambers organises the South
Yorkshire events at Tickhill which are supported by a number of family groups,
including David Wheeldon and his daughter Megan, and Maggie and daughter Sammy Fairburn, whose family butcher business and father, Trevor Fairburn, sponsors the series. Anne has built up a keen following with a good variety of turnouts, including novice Carol Wood’s small pony; novice horse drivers Clare Caldicot and Sue Lawson; the pony teams of Angela Smith competing against Anya Mower, and Sarah Daley, formerly Braybrook, with her new tandem. Maggie Fairburn won the six-strong novice
pony class; daughter Sammy second in open pony to veteran and national driver Elisabeth Greensmith. Anne drove Cathy Towle’s new horse for cones and obstacles aſt er Cathy drove him in P&P. “Some people aim to complete without
being eliminated,” said Anne. “We try to make it a fun day for everybody.”
