Forty years ago Walter and Eliza Hall Institute scientist Professor Don Metcalf discovered colony stimulating factors, blood hormones that promote the growth of immune system cells. In the decades since, his discovery has benefited more than 10 million cancer patients by boosting immune systems ravaged by chemotherapy.
