THE UNFORGETTABLE ERNIE WISE ITV1, 7pm
He will always be “the one with the short, fat hairy legs”, Eric Morecambe’s sidekick, one half of Britain’s foremost comedy duo. The idea of Eric Morecambe without Ernie Wise seems unfathomable now, and they still hold a place in the nation’s heart, 27 years since Eric’s death, and 12 since Ernie passed. Nevertheless, while tributes have flowed in almost relentlessly for Eric over the years, Ernie has been left in the shadows somewhat. Hopefully, this documentary, which examines his rise to fame, will go some way to redressing the balance.

The cast list for this latest adaptation of Mary Norton’s classic novel reads like a who’s who of the bigwigs of the showbiz world. Stephen Fry, Victoria Wood and Christopher Eccleston head the line-up, with rising star Aisling Loftus picking up the reins as the young Arriety Clock. In the story, she sneaks upstairs and gets friendly with lonely James who lives above her. But when the lad unknowingly lets on to his grandmother about the borrowers, the little ones find themselves faced with uncertainty and the big wide world.
