LAPLAND BBC1, 10pm We won’t be visiting The Royle Family this Christmas, but that doesn’t mean we’ll miss out on seeing Sue Johnston playing a matriarch this festive season, as BBC have given her a new clan, the Lewises of Birkenhead, for comedy drama Lapland. Sue stars as Eileen Lewis, whose large, close-knit family save all year round to make Christmas special. This year, they’re really pulling the stops out and going to Lapland, but as well as Santa and reindeers, the trip also holds some extra surprises – and not all of them will be pleasant.

BILL BAILEY: DANDELION MIND Channel 4, 10.55pm It’s a good festive season for Bill Bailey. On Christmas Day he’ll appear in Doctor Who, playing an intergalactic forestry warden (yes, really). But before that’s broadcast, Channel 4 is bringing us an opportunity to see a performance recorded during his most recent tour – a real treat, especially for those fans who didn’t manage to get tickets at the time. The theme of the show is doubt, but as everyone who’s ever seen Bill in full flow will tell you, he has a tendency to veer off on a tangent from time to time – and then, of course, there’s those musical interludes…
