whatever we do, participants really do range from super fit to “just started”. Following a recent agonising injured back muscle I’ve been doing the V Core (core first level) classes three times a week as well as the Total Body Conditioning class 10.30-11.30 on Wednesdays with Damon. He’s an experienced, energetic, fun teacher and his class includes cardio work, functional strength and core exercise. It’s high intensity, low impact so less stress on joints. My back feels stronger and I’m remembering to use core muscles outside of gym in everyday activities. VIPR is the second level of core classes and exercises are similar to V Core but also use the plastic, log VIPR, it’s harder and best done if you’ve no niggling back pains. The third level of classes uses kettle bells, small round weights with handles. Movements usually require you to bend from the hips and swing the weights. Momentum comes from the gluteals and hamstrings. The core is worked hard because the centre of gravity constantly changes. There are also fast classes for triathlon and

powerplate (great for conditioning and stretching legs but with less stress on joints). If you are totally new to the fast classes try the 5 minute “how to” sessions just before fast classes start. Fitness trainers and physiotherapists confirm that if you exercise without regularly reviewing what you do then bad habits and postures form and some muscle groups may get injured and/or neglected. (I have found this as a keen swimmer who never had lessons). The gym fitness staff are available to periodically review your gym program and the classes you choose. It is also advisable to have one-to-one sessions with a personal trainer now and again to tailor your sports and exercises to your own ability, health, injuries and time. Jen McNaught runs the Personal Training team at Virgin Active Barbican. She’ll discuss your ambitions and match you up with a suitable trainer. I spoke to Hannah Mcintyre, Personal Trainer, about her training and experience. Hannah has relocated from New Zealand with her City Accountant boyfriend. Her parents were not health conscious and as a teenager Hannah realised that addressing the poor nutrition and low fitness of the whole family was up to her. She studied a practical- based two year university exercise science course, part of which involved setting exercise programs for students and staff. As a keen rower she led the university rowing team’s

training until an undiagnosed spinal weakness led to a herniated disc, ending her rowing career and starting prolonged recovery training. Around this time her mother (who was overweight, had a knee injury and high blood pressure) suffered a heart attack. Hannah managed her subsequent fitness plan and diet. Since graduating several years ago Hannah has worked successfully with many different clients and is also qualified in therapeutic massage and as a smoking cessation practitioner. She is an experienced, motivating trainer and thoroughly nice person.
