The Whitechapel Gallery Thomas Struth

Photographs 1978-2010 Opens 6th July

his is the German artist Thomas Struth’s first solo show in Britain for almost 20 years. Known for his large-scale photographs, Struth’s diverse subject matter ranges from the undergrowth of the Asian jungle to streetscapes of New York or Tokyo. The exhibition includes his iconic series of life size photographs of museum visitors, where we can see tourists gazing at Michelangelo’s David in Florence or schoolchildren chatting in front of Velázquez’ Las Meninas at the Prado. Struth lets us see the reaction to the work of art without seeing the work itself. The Whitechapel Gallery has gathered over 70 works by Struth for this show demonstrating the variety of his work and his key position in the world of fine art photography.
