EDUCATION Junior masterchef

Students enjoyed a taste of working in a restaurant kitchen alongside three top chefs.

Four catering students from Stoke-on-Trent College visited the Potters’ Club in Stoke as part of a partnership between the two organisations.

They helped prepare a six- course meal for members alongside the club’s head chef Rino Salvemini, celebrity consultant chef John Benson-Smith and former Savoy chef and author Anton Edelmann. Mr Benson-Smith, a former Northern Chef of the Year and a regular judge on BBC TV show Masterchef, has previously visited the college to give a

demonstration to students. He has agreed to work with the students over the next few months to share his expertise and help them brush up their skills.

£4.8m grant will help create 100 new companies

University awarded cash to boost economic growth

Staffordshire University has been awarded £4.8 million to

support businesses and boost economic growth across the region.

The Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) grant is forecast to create more than 100 new companies and 200 jobs. The university is to receive £1.2 million a year until 2015, which it is planning to use to support start-ups and established firms as well as pioneer new products and practices.

Enterprise and commercial development director Sandra Booth, who led the bid, said: “Our previous success in delivering knowledge exchange and enterprise activities has enabled us to

secure this funding, allowing us to make further significant contributions to the local and regional economy. “The HEIF funds will now be used on three key strands; creating growth, achieving innovation and embedding enterprise.”

The Government cash will be used to fund programmes such as Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) and Applied Research Centres (ARCs), which can help small and medium-sized firm benefit from specialist expertise in areas including digital media, design, mobile computing, electronics, renewable energy, security and medical technologies. Some cash will go towards the university’s SPEED (Student Placements in Enterprise Education) and EFS

(Enterprise Fellowship Scheme) projects, which have so far supported 163 new businesses, about 90 per cent of which have stayed in the region.

The university is also planning to expand its internship opportunities.

Paul Richards, university deputy vice-chancellor, said: “We are committed to the Local Enterprise Partnership’s strategic priorities to support local economic regeneration through the creation of knowledge-based private sector jobs and growth. “Universities are central to economic growth and we have a long and successful track record of working with businesses to raise their competitiveness and introduce new products and processes.”

£4m learning Hub

Old farm buildings at Keele University have been transformed into a £4 million Sustainability Hub.

The centre will act as a focus for environmental research and will also be a place where the public and businesses can see alternative technology in action and pick up tips. Stoke-on-Trent North MP Joan Walley, the keynote speaker at its launch, said: “If we are going to get jobs in this area, it will require innovation and research.” The hub is packed with green features, including photo-voltaic panels, ground-source heat pumps, biomass heating and rainwater recycling. There is also a lecture theatre, exhibition space, study areas and a coffee lounge. Hub manager Sharon George said: “It’sa resource for everyone to spark ideas about how to be more sustainable and encourage learning in this area at every level.”

Learn to lead

The North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce is offering a Foundation Degree in Leadership, Innovation and Management.

And the success of its 12- strong September intake means it is now recruiting for March 2012.

Training development manager Linda McQuade said: “The Chamber prides itself in its ability to listen to the needs of the business community and has developed, alongside Staffordshire University, this unique offer. Due to the success of our September intake we are now looking to recruit for March – funding is still available through www.embltd.co.uk/lmas and can be used for the March programme.” ■ For more information email lindamcquade@ nscci.co.uk.
