Work Choice

In 2009 Careers Development Group and WISE Employment came together to create a special purpose vehicle called CDG - WISE Ability. The first year has seen massive strides made as the organisation strives to deliver a successful employment programme for people with disabilities and long term health conditions.

CDG - WISE Ability was formed to tender for the Work Choice contract for Hampshire and Isle of Wight, which it won. It is jointly owned (50 per cent each) by CDG and by WISE Employment’s UK-based subsidiary, WISE Ability.

CDG’s infrastructure supports with accounts, human resources, marketing, security and ICT functions. However, CDG - WISE Ability is a separate organisation in its own right, and a company limited by guarantee with its own board of directors.

On 25 October 2010, 18,000 customers nationwide on the old Workstep programme transitioned across to the new programme, Work Choice.

The Work Choice programme was introduced by the government to help people with disabilities and long term health conditions to find a job and to support them in that job, enabling them to sustain their employment.

This includes showing employers how to adapt work tasks if necessary, as well as providing them with assistance in applying for grants, which could help fund specialised equipment or other workplace adjustments.

Organisations comprising the supply chain were chosen for their experience and expertise working with the customer group, along with their existing geographical spread, local knowledge and networks. There were historical relationships between the partners, which have proved to be invaluable in ensuring a seamless provision for customers.
