What's On
Several busy years of late nights, last minute amendments and looming deadlines and we are still going strong!
Firstly, we believe a big thank you is in order to all of our readers, advertisers and contributors for your continued support over the last quarter of a century, as without you, writing this article would be impossible! Additionally, we are also very honoured to cooperate with several large organisations, businesses and local councils in and around Swansea whose contributions and support have played a vital role in our success.
Squeak! Opening the attic to recover the archive of magazines was very nostalgic as was revisiting the past 25 years worth of events and seeing just how Swansea City and our magazine have grown stronger together.
It’s been a rollercoaster of a journey starting in the midst of the 80s' recession when the magazine was fi rst named ‘Outlook City’ in Dec/Jan of ‘87. Over the years, we have experimented with different sizes and formats; it began with a now comparatively small, slightly bigger than A6 format. In ’92, it morphed into A5 when it was fi rst titled ‘What’s On in Swansea’, whilst expanding in ’93 to an A4 format. Finally, ’97 saw the slightly shorter A4 format that has gradually grown taller over the years to the 164mm high magazine that we see today. Phew!
Together with the format, the design has continued to evolve from edition to edition. Gone are the days of sticking and pasting adverts, page layouts and sitting with a typesetter for days on end. Today, the offi ce, equipped with the latest iMacs, iPads, iPhones and iPods, sees a new dawn of magazine publishing dominated by the ease of e-mail and convenience of the Internet.
The magazine was launched by John Hughes, advertising consultant, in ’97, but the sudden expansion saw the addition of Susan Hughes, listings editor, in ’98 who has helped to hold the fort ever since.
Our articles and editorial remain bustling with events and my oh my, the listings have blossomed into an almighty task; featuring your essential guide of daily listings, festivals, library events and a comprehensive collation of regular meetings, clubs and classes to suit all ages. They are the perfect 'go to' for that family outing or rainy day.
