IN OTHER WORDS…
Eythor Ivar Jonsson CEO of Klak - Innovation Center
Some would say our children play too much when they should be taking life more seriously. It is more likely that they don’t play enough. Tey should play more and even more importantly all of us should take part in the play. Many of us lost the ability to be playful when we still were children. Now we don’t understand the meaning of the word. Playing is not waste of time or at least it shouldn’t be. Playing is not a waste of time, experiment and socialise. And it is fun. It is not that we should be taking life more seriously but rather if we want to be serious about life we need to be more playful.
Organisations are becoming more serious about playing. Tey do it to create a better culture, increase teamwork and organisational learning. It is, however, most important regarding creativity and creation. Organisations have discovered the importance of playing with the aim of being innovative. It is important that companies do not try to become so serious that they institutionalise innovation. To play with innovation one needs to be playful and give up control.
Te theme of this third issue of Nordic Innovation is playing with innovation. We got three innovators to answer questions related to how to play with innovation. Tey helped us to explore the concept. It is not about efficiency but effectiveness, it is about being fearless to create new things and it is about the tolerance of failure. Companies and individuals need to play with innovation like they were kid- curious about the world.
Tis third issue discusses also the gaming industry and gaming companies. Te point is that playing has become a huge industry and the gaming industry is rivalling the film industry. Furthermore there is discussion of the creation of a new constitution in Iceland using web based products which have recently been introduced by start-ups. It is possible to make big and ambitious projects like a new constitution much easier and cheaper with smart solutions. Tis issue portrays also a list of 100 Icelandic ventures which was made for Frjals verslun, an Icelandic business magazine. Te list was published to promote the importance of new ventures and the value of new companies. It emphasises why it is important to play with innovation.
Te theme of the next issue of Nordic Innovation will be the taste of innovation. We will explore some issues regarding style, evaluation and success of innovation and talk to entrepreneurs in the food industry. Innovation should not only be seen and felt or heard, it should also be tasted and hopefully we will find out what is the taste of innovation.
Nordic innovation is published by Klak – Innovation center in Iceland. Te entrepreneurs who are developing their businesses in the Klak - Business accelerator (Vidskiptasmidjan) have created this magazine together. It is important that more entrepreneurs, innovators and designers join forces with us to make this magazine not just about Nordic innovation but more importantly a platform for innovation in the Nordic countries.
