Speech and Language Works Set to Deliver Learning

Language and Loving It in 2012

Training program gives Early Childhood Teachers the tools they need to succeed

Kids these days. They’re busy, just like us.

In fact, a recent Statistics Canada report found that about 54 per cent of Canadian children aged six months to five years spend a good deal of time in some type of non-parental child care.

That’s a big deal.

As parents, we want to ensure that time away from home is productive and meaningful. We want our children talking, laughing and engaging with peers and teachers.

A recent report, conducted by David Dickinson at Vanderbilt University and Michelle Porche at Wellesley College, bears this out. The researchers found a strong link between language and literacy experiences at the preschool level and word comprehension and recognition by Grade 4.

The same study stressed the growing importance of highly qualified Early Childhood Teachers with access to professional development training opportunities that support language development and interaction skills.

Learning Language and Loving It™ is a training program for Early Childhood Teachers working in preschool, day home, day care and school settings.

The program helps Early Childhood Teachers more fully understand language development in children. Participants learn how to:

• Promote language development in children using everyday, routine activities

• Enhance peer interaction • Improve pretend play

• And, instill a love of books and print.

Learning Language and Loving It™ is being offered to Early Childhood Teachers in Medicine Hat and surrounding area over six evening sessions in January, February and March 2012. As an added bonus, the program includes four on-site visits to each centre.

Following last year’s excellent response, Speech and Language Works is once again delivering the program.

“It’s an amazing course,” says Lisa Nickel, program co-ordinator with Apple Blossom Day Home. “I learned practical, everyday activities that have helped me foster language and literacy development in young children. I’d recommend this course to anyone with a child in their life.”

Ask your child care centre if their Early Childhood Educators are attending Learning Language and Loving It™. Your child will benefit -- today, tomorrow and throughout their schooling!
