Functional outerwear for children

- Dressing for the Hill

Make your family’s next trip to the hill their best yet with the ultimate outerwear, and gear, in comfort and maneuverability. Because Little Rippers knows that keeping children warm and dry is key to their enjoyment on their snowboard, we want to tell you about some of the hottest new features in outerwear this winter which make it more convenient than ever for kids to gear up and focus on having a blast!

Coats and snow pants in toddler sizes now have this great new feature called “Room to Grow,” which is an extra seam you can cut out of the coat sleeves and pant legs, allowing this outerwear to last your child that next season or two. This is great value when investing in quality outerwear.

When selecting a coat, look for one that is waterproof, windproof and breathable; with a wicking layer on the inside to prevent moisture from seeping in. It doesn’t have to be big and heavy to keep the little snowboarder comfortable and dry. Our coats come with powder waists that attach to belt loops using Velcro, as well as using smooth, slippery material in this area; making it impossible for snow to make it’s way up inside the coat. The children’s coat pockets are Tricot lined for warmth, a material that is soft and warm like your typical fleece, but one step up as it is also moisture wicking, where fleece is not. They also have one handed pulls on the pockets, making it easy for kids to work themselves and ensuring that wherever they go, their pockets will remain soft and dry. Fully functional hoods designed for comfort and snow/wind protection are a great feature, as well as fleece-lined storm cuffs.

Our snowboard pants come with the Room to Grow feature as well, are lightly insulated, and have double seams on the backside and knees, for maximum durability and longevity. They come equipped with gators at the bottom, as well as the same slippery material to keep snow from collecting at the base of the

pant leg. We are fully stocked with the hottest pants and coats; with the ever- popular bold and trendy patterns as well as solid colours. Volcom, Ride, and Burton are all great names that we carry in toddler and children’s sizes; their outerwear is specifically design for snowboarding.

New technology in boarding has made it easier than ever for kids to learn. The edges of the board are specially made curved from the middle to not catch edges, so kids can stay standing on the board for longer. The coolest new design this year is Star Wars scenes on the burton snowboards, these are super popular. A riglet wheel is a great learning tool; it is a pulley you can attach to the front edge of the board so they can practise balancing while you tow them along. Bindings are also made super convenient and kid friendly. Where there are normally two straps you must move to the side when you step in, on the children’s board there is instead just one easily adjustable strap, which flops to the outside when undone. This ensures a smooth and no fuss process for kids. Snowboard boots, as well, are made with the Room to Grow feature, with removable insoles.

Specially designed snowboard (and skiing) socks are a worthwhile investment. A Lycra blend, they fit little feet’s contours perfectly underneath the boots and bindings, providing comfort all day long. They come up high on the leg, and stay up, to provide another layer of warmth against the leg. An employee tells me her son won’t ride without his. As one package of socks states, “Because cotton socks are a surefire way to ruin a kid’s day”; enough said.

Good gloves are such an important component to outerwear. Our gloves in store keep hands warm with a Velcro tighten function at the wrist, which is user friendly for kids, as well as they pull higher up on the wrist. Also equipped with the soft fleecy snot rag on top of the thumb,

because we all know it will get used as such, and plastic material for their best grip

on the palms. We carry some that come with an eight hour warmer

packet and a specially designed pocket for the warmer on top of the hand.

Goggles aren’t necessary until one is advanced enough to be going fast enough to need them to keep the snow and wind out of their eyes.

Helmets are a necessity, and are easier to adjust than ever with a convenient and easy to use dial at the back. They also efficiently keep heads warm on their own, no need for a toque.

I would highly recommend taking your kids to the Hidden Valley Ski Area; the magic carpet (a bunny hill) is the best area for kids to learn that I have ever seen. It is a super easy and safe lift that kids can use themselves. They have a blast on it. I have two boys, aged four and six, and they both started boarding at age three. Today they are energetic boarders who love winters and get excited to go to the hill. Here at the Boardinghouse, Bliss and Little Rippers, we sell the snowboard, skateboard and wakeboard lifestyle. We carry only the top brands that represent this lifestyle, and hope that you will come by and help you let us outfit the entire family in quality outerwear for your best winter yet.
