A lot of people don’t want to try Snow Sports! After all, there is nothing natural about strapping on a board, or two, pointing them down a slope covered in slidy white stuff in the middle of winter and holding on for dear life – at least that was the first experience I remember on an extremely cold day in the Cairngorm Mountains of Scotland, but somehow it was fun!
Things have changed a lot over the last few years. Equipment has made it easier and more fun to get started. The sport has developed so many aspects such as Alpine skiing, Nordic Skiing, Race, Skier Cross, Freestyle, Big mountain, Heli skiing, Cat Skiing, Back Country, etc. Not to mention the same on snowboard. True . . . it gets a bit nippy in Canada from time to time but there must be something about all of this that makes people brave the elements year after year?
Snow Sports is more than just a healthy outdoor environment with beautiful surroundings and the crisp air in your lungs. It is exhilarating, challenging, a social activity and a place to get away from our busy everyday lives.
The way we teach it has also become more and more specialized. Understanding a little more about how it is done may give an insight how it can be of benefit to you, your children and the whole family.
Firstly, instructors need to know a bit about skiing or boarding of course. Both Snowboarding and Alpine Skiing have governing bodies which provide certification for instructors. This ensures a standard is achieved and you know what you are getting. For Skiing it is the CSIA (Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance) and for Snow Boarding CASI (Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors).
