News You Can Use A monthly newsletter from the Cancer Learning Center May 2011 – Issue 70 Coping with a Cancer Diagnosis

Let’s be honest. Coping with cancer is difficult at best. When faced with a cancer diagnosis, people react in their own ways. Shock, anger, denial, and fear are common emotions. Many of the more than nine million American cancer survivors alive today have adjusted to the disease and gone on to live happy, productive lives.

Here are some approaches that may help you or your loved ones cope with a cancer diagnosis:

• Talk with a family member, a friend, or a professional.

Taking the time to be with your family and loved ones may help you cope with a cancer diagnosis.

• Take time away to rest and spend time with family.

• Keep a written, audio, or art journal where you can freely express what you are experiencing.

• Volunteer to help others who have cancer.

• Live each day and plan for the future.
