A monthly newsletter from the Cancer Learning Center • October 2011 - Issue 75 Patient and Family Support Services Questions About Cancer?

Coping with cancer is hard. Patients and their family members often feel afraid, helpless, and sad. If dealing with the disease itself weren’t hard enough, navigating the health-care system can be overwhelming.

Patient and Family Support Services (PFSS) at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) helps cancer patients and their family members learn to cope. Te licensed clinical support professionals on the PFSS staff are important members of HCI’s cancer treatment team.

Support professionals are caring listeners. Tey can refer patients to other sources of help for their individual needs. Tey can help ease distress related to cancer. Tey can guide patients through the health-care system.

Support professionals work with patients one-on-one, as a family, or in a support group. With their help, patients and their families can draw on their inner resources and social supports to deal with the problems cancer can create.

To contact HCI Patient and Family Support Services, call 801- 585-9755, or ask your doctor or nurse to refer you. Also, stop by the Cancer Learning Center to browse our materials related to coping with cancer, or call 801-581-6365 to speak with a cancer information specialist.
