A monthly newsletter from the Cancer Learning Center • June 2011 - Issue 71 Nutrition During Cancer Treatment

Proper nutrition is important during cancer treatment. Side effects of treatment and changes in your body’s needs may make it difficult to maintain a proper diet. Here are some tips to help you eat well when you have cancer.

Talk with a dietitian. Huntsman Cancer Institute’s registered dietitians can help you find enjoyable foods that ease side effects and provide the nutrition you need to heal.

Eat small meals throughout the day. Cancer and its treatment can decrease your appetite. Smaller, more frequent meals can help you eat a variety of nutritious foods.

Drink water or juice throughout the day. Staying hydrated can ease treatment’s unpleasant side effects.

Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated can reduce some of the unpleasant side effects that come with cancer treatment. Keep a water or juice bottle nearby to sip on throughout the day.

Keep track of what you eat. Cancer treatment can change the way food tastes to you. Make a note of foods that taste bad or make your side effects worse. Jotting down ideas for dishes that you enjoy can help you create a menu and shopping list of foods to keep on hand.
