Prevention Month

December has been designated National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Every day, millions of Americans
travel on our Nation’s roadways. Thousands of these drivers and passengers tragically lose their lives each year because of drunk, drugged, or distracted driving. During National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, we recommit to preventing the loss of life by practicing safe driving practices and reminding others to be sober, drug free, and safe on the road. Impaired driving and its
consequences can seriously alter or even destroy lives and property in a moment. This reckless behavior not only includes drunk driving, but also the growing problem of drugged driving. Drugs, including those prescribed by a physician, can impair judgment and motor skills. It is critical that we encourage our young people and fellow citizens to make responsible decisions when driving or riding as a passenger, especially if drug use is apparent. This National Impaired Driving
Prevention Month, we must also draw attention to the dangers of distracted driving, including using electronic equipment or texting while behind the wheel of a vehicle. When people take their attention away from the road to answer a call, respond to a message, or use a device, they put themselves and others at risk.

by Robyn Hatch The Salem Lions Club once again sponsored the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in the center of town. Close to 60 Haigh School students participated in this event. Many of their families came to join the festivities as well. The students gathered at Haigh School, then walked down to the gazebo for the tree lighting ceremony and holiday singing. As usual, Haigh’s music teacher, Amy Moldoff donated eye glasses to the members of the Salem Lions Club. The big blue Christmas tree ended the event with Mrs. Claus, from the television station, standing around for Christmas photos. This was a wonderful event that ended on a joyous moment for the children.

Rockingham Rd., held a brief yet meaningful mortgage burning ceremony to celebrate what Pastor Matthew Fagan describes as a “work from the Lord” at their adjacent Hunt Road property.
Heritage had entered into two mortgages.
The first for the purchase of the Rockingham Road property where the church meets which was valued at $300,000. The second for property adjacent to the meetinghouse, which was valued at $230,000. “We had originally purchased the property on Rockingham Road and sometime after

that we were approached by the owner of the adjacent property on Hunt Road and asked if we were interested in buying his property. After prayer and discussion, we decided to hold a special offering to see if the down payment would be raised. We needed about $40,000 to secure the down payment. That special offering raised $68,000 and we went and bought the property,” Fagan said. That was about four years ago and the 20-
year mortgage was paid faithfully every month and was officially paid completely within the past several weeks. “It really is from God,” Fagan said. “We took
another special offering on November 6 to raise $45,800 to pay off the mortgage completely on the Hunt Rd. property and that offering raised $62,000 so we paid the mortgage off,” Fagan said.
It should be noted that Heritage Baptist
Church is not a large congregation, the church membership consists of about 30 or so families, ranging from retirees to young families with children.
Services are held at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday
School and regular services are at10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays and Prayer Meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
