News You Can Use A monthly newsletter from the Cancer Learning Center October 2010 – Issue 63 Coping with Memory Changes

People with cancer sometimes have a hard time remembering things. Tese memory difficulties can create confusion, sadness or depression.

What causes these cancer-related memory problems? Research shows cancer and some cancer treatments can raise levels of proteins that keep memory from working properly. Stress, medication, chemotherapy, or other health problems could also contribute. Talk to your health care team if you have memory problems.

Tese tips may be helpful in coping with temporary memory problems:

• Do things that need the most thinking at the time of day when you feel best.

• Get extra rest.

• Write down important dates and information on a calendar.

• Use a pill box or calendar to help you keep track of your medicines.

• Write down or record things you want to remember.

Do things that need the most thinking at the time of day when you feel best.

• Bring a friend or family member to appointments to take notes for you.

• Ask a friend or family member to stay with you when you are confused.
