Daren Green captures national title on Golfweek Tour D


aren Green of Durham has been a regular on the Golfweek Amateur Tour for the last 10 years. He start- ed in the C Flight but earned a promotion a few seasons back.


But until the national championship at Hilton Head Island on Oct. 23, he had never found the winning formula in the higher division.


“When I first started the tour I was an upper-90s shooter,” he said of his C Flight days. “And I’ve placed in the money a lot and lost in playoffs, but this was the first time ever winning a B Flight event.” While the regular season consists of one-day shootouts, the national champion- ship was decided over 54 holes and Green said that was to his advantage. “I don’t shoot a lot of low scores, but I’m usually consistent,” he said after his 81-84-83 effort at Palmetto Dunes edged Latella Salvatore of Michigan by one shot. The top 10 finishers in the division of 169 players were separated by only seven shots.


After the first two days at the George Fazio and Robert Trent Jones courses, Green was tied for fourth place and faced a two-shot deficit. His chances didn’t look good when he fell six shots of the pace early in the final round, but when his play-
