Good, bad, ugly, but it’s still golf By BETSEY MITCHELL

efore I was an antique — not as grizzled as you, my friend — but in my younger days, I lived in the north- ern climes where the golf season came to a screeching halt at the end of October. Even though I now experience the joy of golf long after the jack-o-lantern turns to mush, finding the sun lower on the horizon causes me to look back and ponder the sea- son past – both good and bad. This is the first year I’ve experienced the new MiniVerde bermuda greens, and they may be the best news in years for courses struggling with the summer heat. They roll like a dream and don’t have that nasty graininess of old-time bermuda- grass.

The only improvement I would make is to install those clever machines that show the line like we see on TV. Could you get me one of those for Christmas? The other happy news is somebody finally had the good sense to build a new course for somebody other than Bubba Watson.

Carolina Colours in New Bern was born to please every kind of everyday golfer. It is a shining example that it’s possible for a

course to be playable yet not boring. Next time you’re heading to the coast, put it on your play list. You won’t be dis- appointed.

Under “other news,” because I’ll admit to a tiny personality flaw that makes it hard for me to be anything other than jeal- ous (annoyed), my hubby sank two more holes-in-one this year. That puts him at four against my one, which was so long ago it’s hardly worth crowing about. “Good for you,

Betsey

honey,” she said sarcasti- cally.

The sad news is that I can’t seem to get excited about the LPGA Tour. Shame on me. I don’t know what the problem is …

DUELING

I’ll flip on the TV over the weekend, late in the day and I might find coverage. I’ll tune in for a couple of holes but it just doesn’t hold my attention. I know there are some great players. I am amazed that Juli Inkster is still in contention, and yet, I still prefer the PGA Tour.

Howard, oh wise and really ancient sage, what is wrong with me?

DIVOTS

Nothing’s wrong, the best is coming By HOWARD WARD

C time.

Remember how it was when you and “hubby” first met? By the way, does he have each of those hole-in-one balls mount- ed and on the wall in the den? Or has he already started his personal trophy room?

As for the MiniVerde movement, I love it. That grass just laughs at the 100-degeree heat and soaks up the rays. I’ve played a few courses recently that have made the transition from bentgrass and I know

that the superintendents are loving it, too. As one of them told me recently, “It’s the first summer I’ve been able to go home and sleep at night.”

As for you needing a diagram on how to putt, seems I remember a couple of months ago when you drained a couple of real “gaggers” to halve your match in the North Carolina-Tennessee Battle of the Smokies.

ome on Bets, there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s called loving the game and wanting to be with it all the

Fame is not THAT fleeting. Due to other commitments — mainly with doctors — I missed the outing at Carolina Colours, but I’ve heard some great reviews. I’m delighted that some developers will build a course with more in mind than the “mad bombers.” I still recall the days when we mar- veled at the way a Billy Casper or Gary Player or Harvie Ward or Ray Floyd could work a golf ball. Now it’s bombs away with 350-yard drives and just fly that wedge to the pin, baby.

I hate what’s happening with the LPGA. You never know when they’re going to play a tournament and when they do, you never know which country it’s in or what time Golf Channel is going to show it. Is it 7 a.m. or 7 p.m.? I love watching Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Cristie Kerr, Angela Stanford and Michelle Wie play, but it’s increasingly hard to find them. And frankly, by the time I read through the leaderboard and work my way through a dozen or so names before finding an American, I’m depressed. But chin up, old girl. I’m sure good things are just around the corner. The ques- tion is: when do we quit walking in circles?

You’ve played the rest... now come play the best!
