details round the doors and windows were picked out in finely carved white marble – which also features throughout the porch and the veranda, with coloured inlay panels and bas-relief images of historic Gurdwara buildings in India. The concrete-framed building has walls cast in concrete to
provide support and restraint to the stone, with partial fill insu- lation in the cavity and the stone outside. A mix of old and new technology was used to construct the
domes. To create each one’s onion shape, sprayed concrete was added to an insulated core, and the exterior was covered with hand-made marble tiles. Inside, the domes were lined with spe- cially commissioned glass mosaics. Each of the four main domes has a unique design and colour scheme. This innovative approach was developed jointly by the design
team supported by the specialist subcontractors, concrete suppli- ers Shotcrete and stonemasons Trevedi Corporation, fully approved by the building inspector at the STBC (Sikh Temple Building Council). The doors, staircase balustrades and timber panelling were all
carved in India.
