Wall, a project management group that is part of GVA Grimley and with the London Olympic Games due to start only a short time away in the summer of 2012 the project took on a fast- track nature. A team of consultants was recruited to work with Second
London Wall that was led by architect Jestico + Whiles, a prac- tice with a lengthy track record in the hotel sector both in the UK and further afield. Jestico + Whiles’ design for the W Hotel in London’s Leicester Square won the special tribute prize at MIPIM earlier this year – an award that the group had also claimed 12 months earlier for its work on the Andels Hotel at Lodz in Poland. Jestico + Whiles teamed up with engineering consultants
Adams Kara Taylor and Hoare Lea and a design was drawn up for a hotel comprising 252 guest bedrooms of different sizes that
would have an ‘Excellent’ rating under the BREEAM environ- mental assessment scheme. Jestico + Whiles produced a design for a building with a ser-
pentine form aimed at defining the external spaces that was also driven by restrictions on construction and the client’s require- ments for types of rooms and mix. The design of the building is comprised of three key elements:
a central spine containing the bedrooms with vertical circulation and flanked by two crescents that house further bedrooms and gently curving corridors. The hotel is clad in several thousand coloured, textured stain-
less-steel shingles, while the glazed façades feature a large-scale screen-printed pattern that Jestico + Whiles were inspired to specify by the ‘illusion of depth’ seen in some of the paintings by English op-art painter Bridget Riley.
