December 3 - 16, 2011 Reading portrays Jewish pioneers

Jewish marriages in early Arizona are the topic of a reading to be held at 7 p.m. Mon., Dec. 5 at the Arizona Jewish Historical Society Cutler-Plotkin Heritage Center.

The new play, “For Better and Worse: Jewish Marriages in the Arizona Territory,” written by renowned historian Harriet Rochlin, will be read by the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company in collaboration with the Arizona Jewish Historical Society. The play includes “vignette-type stories of a variety of women who helped to settle Arizona and bring some Jewish fl avor to the territory.” “Nearly two years ago, Larry Bell of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society approached me with the idea of creating a new work for Arizona’s Centennial,” says Janet Arnold, producing director for the Arizona Jewish Theatre Company. “I thought it was a great idea and immediately contacted Harriet Rochlin, since she is a real expert on Jews of the Southwest. She, too, was intrigued, and we now have a general script to draw upon.”

The program, made possible by a grant from the Arizona Humanities Council and the Jewish Community Foundation, includes the acting contributions of Arizona Jewish Theatre Company members Barbara Mark Dreyfuss, Barbara Goldman, Cheryl Hammerman, Rabbi Bonnie Sharfman, Barb Zemel, and Janet Arnold.

Tickets cost $10 for AzJHS members and $18for others. The Arizona Jewish Historical Society Cutler-Plotkin Heritage Center is located at 122 E. Culver in Phoenix. For more information, visit www.azjhs.org or www.azjewishtheatre.org.
