65 Cocteau comes to community college

“A Voice” recounts the Greek tragedy of a man being controlled by a perfect and fully wound clockwork to amuse the gods in Jean Cocteau’s 1934 retelling of the Oedipus myth “The Infernal Machine” at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3, 8 and 9 with matinees at 2 p.m. Dec. 4 and 10 at Theatre Outback, 1833 W. Southern Ave. on the MCC campus.

Labeled by academia and critics as Cocteau’s most fully realized work, the play is being produced by Mesa Community College Theatre Arts and Film Department. As the machine unwinds towards life’s inevitable destruction in this surrealist retelling of the Sophocles tale, the tragic hero is portrayed as a cocky, virginal youth while Sphinx is a ravishing nymph who is as beautiful as she is deadly. This production is directed by Kevin Dressler.

General admission tickets are $15. Mesa Community College District employees and alumni admission is $12, and current MCC students will be admitted for $10 with ID.

The box offi ce hours are noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and can be reached at 480-461-7172.
