Neighbors Free car seat clinic at Mercy Gilbert

Learn how to avoid the common mistakes parents and caregivers unknowingly make when installing a car or booster seat at a free car seat clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Sat., Dec. 3 in Mercy Gilbert Medical Center’s east parking lot behind Medical Office Building.

Certified Child Safety Technicians will ensure that the car seats are installed correctly and are appropriate for the age, height and weight of the child. Additionally, Mercy Gilbert will collect used car seats to recycle on Earth Day in April. Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers, members of Catholic Healthcare West, are sponsoring the event in collaboration with Chandler and Gilbert fire departments and Safe Kids of Maricopa County. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center is located at 3555 S. Val Vista Dr. in Gilbert. Registration is required by calling 877-728-5414.

BLD offers cooking classes

Those in need of culinary inspiration can now take cooking classes taught by BLD’s Chef Ehren Litzenberger, who will demonstrate farm-fresh, scratch recipes for “sophisticated, approachable cuisine.”

Classes are held at BLD’s communal table, allowing guests to get an up-close view of Litzenberger preparing dishes ranging from holiday appetizers to seasonal veggies and soul-warming breakfast ideas. Questions and conversation is encouraged.

December’s class, “Beet this … Chef Ehren proves beets can be great!” is available at 3 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 10 or 3 p.m. Sat., Dec. 17. Attendees will learn how to make roasted baby beet salad with goat cheese, arugula, cashews and orange oil; beets carpaccio with burratta, almonds and lemon zest; and beet risotto, a dish Litzenberger says “will go with almost anything ... and it’s an awesome color.” January and February 2012 classes will be scheduled soon. The $30 cost per attendee includes a glass of wine, samples of each dish and copies of Litzenberger’s recipes to take home.

BLD is located at 1920 W. Germann Rd. in Southern Chandler. Hours are: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Happy Hour is from 3 to 7 p.m. daily, and the drive-through is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Local author to donate proceeds to ICAN

Ten percent of the December proceeds from sales of “Rhythms & Muse,” a novel and music CD by local author, singer and songwriter Ann Narcisian Videan, will benefit ICAN, a nonprofit youth program in Chandler.

“I realized while writing a news story about ICAN recently that these young people are working to realize life dreams,” says Videan, a SanTan Sun News copyeditor and marketing consultant in Mesa. “Since making dreams come true is the theme of my novel and I have been looking for ways to use this theme to give back to the community, this is a perfect fit.”

The heroine of “Rhythms & Muse,” Alexandra Lauren, finds fulfillment in her life by listening to her intuition, leveraging available resources and taking action steps. Videan says she took these exact steps to realize her own life-long dreams of publishing a book and recording a CD last January. Because the majority of the storyline centers around teenagers aspiring to greatness in the music industry, “Rhythms & Muse” should provide a good

level of inspiration for teens, according to Videan. It also appeals to 40-something women who could use some inspiration to start reaching for something more meaningful in their lives.

“If you know someone who gets a kick out of the 1970s, has ever visited Coeur d’Alene, ID, loves music, or just wants a feel-good read, ‘Rhythms & Muse’ is for them,” Videan says. “The book and CD will not only provide inspiration, but will also lend support to our community’s award-winning local youth program.” Take a sneak peek at Videan’s novel pages and hear musical snippets of her CD at www.tinyurl.com/ANVamazon, and find additional background on her novel blog at www.ANVidean.com.
