BARBICAN LIFE

Looking forward into 2012, the Barbican’s 30th birthday year, one should be pencilling into diaries

very special theatrical events including a visit from the Sydney Theatre Company in Botho

Strauss’ surreal play “Big and Small” in a new adaptation by Martin Crimp starring Cate Blanchett. This will be in the main house in April, whilst in May there is the artistic masterpiece “Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson with choreography by Lucinda Childs. In June and July there will be a season celebrating the works of Pina Bausch both in the Barbican main house and at Sadlers Wells Theatre. The opportunity to keep abreast of world theatre will be enhanced with another visit from Ninagawa in a new Japanese language production of “Cymbeline” opening on 29 May. Even further into 2012 we should note Strindberg’s timeless “Madamoiselle Julie”, directed by Frederic Fisbach and starring Juliette Binoche, playing in the main house in September. Finally, long-term plans should include next August’s season of “Carousel” produced by Opera North.
