Tandridge CHRONICLE DECEMBER 2011
PEOPLE from South Godstone have shown how much they care about their local recreation ground by backing a bid for it to be protected for future generations.
The recreation ground in Lagham Road was one of nine nominated by Tandridge District Council to be included in the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge run by UK charity Fields in Trust. It finished top in a district-wide online vote by residents to show their support for the grounds. All nine Tandridge nominations will go forward to be protected outdoor recreational spaces as a legacy from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, making them eligible to apply for improvement grants.
Ellie Batley was really getting into the spirit of Christmas while working as a volunteer at the Sue Ryder Shop in Station Road East, Oxted. The shop is packed with glitzy things to wear, decorations, toys and unusual gifts for friends and family.

The other sites are: Broadbridge Lane open space, Smallfield; Dormansland Recreation Ground; Felbridge Playing Fields; Grange Meadow, Bletchingley; Queens Park, Caterham; Stafford Road, Caterham; Talbot Road, Lingfield and Whyteleafe Recreation Ground. In the poll, South Godstone was top with 241 votes, well ahead of its nearest rival Grange Meadow in Bletchingley with 143 votes. South Godstone Sports and Community Association treasurer Colin White said he was pleased with the response. “If we can apply for grants, it will help us maintain a sports facility in South Godstone,” he said. Mr White added that it was hoped to stage a celebration at the recreation ground next year to mark the Jubilee.
