3 News National award for journalist Clayton Short
STUDENT journalist and editor of Blog Preston, Joseph Stashko, won Digital Journalist of the year at an awards ceremony in London
last week. Joseph won the award at the Guardian
Student Media Awards which featured six hundred and forty-eight entrants amongst nine categories. The award is an achievement not taken
lightly by the third year journalism stu- dent, as he describes how the award left him feeling. “Quite surprised - I was a bit nervous beforehand but obviously felt very hon- oured to have won the award.” It brings about a fitting end to a suc-
cessful three years study at UCLan, something Stashko appreciates: “It's re- ally nice to be recognised in some way for some of the work “I've been doing a lot during my time
at university, and its a great way to leave.” Joseph impressed the judges with a
range of examples of his own pieces of online journalism. He has been editor at Blog Preston
since 2010, both commenting on and breaking news that is local to the city. The award winner was also judged
on his Twitter feed and his personal blog which ‘contains more theory and thoughtful posts about journalism’. Despite his success, Joseph appears grounded as he talks of the impression
the award may make on prospective em- ployers. “I'd hope that employers would always

“So I'd love to work for the digital side on any quality national newspaper.” The Guardian Student Media Awards

THE ‘A Kiss Not a Contract’ campaign was launched last week
at UCLan. Organised by UCLan’s Students’ Un-
ion’s (SU) Women’s Representative, Kim Quayle, the campaign is being ran within the union. The campaign features striking images and slogans which are influential in mak-
ing women realise that a kiss is not an invitation for someone to rape them or sexually assault them. Stands were allocated for the campaign
and free gingerbread was offered in the Atrium. The campaign is aimed to reach out both women and men. Many sexual assault attacks against
women in the Lancaster and Preston area go unreported, mainly due to the fact that the victims believe that they are the ones to blame.

Miss Quayle said: “Lancashire con-
stabulary told me that in the last month compared to the past five years there have been many complaints of sexual consent and assault. “Women from Lancaster Univer-
sity and from UCLan have not reported some of the sexual assaults. “The issue doesn’t just affect students, it affects families and marriages. “We’re handing out leaflets on sexual assault and handing out stickers in the
Students’ Union. On Tuesday we gave out free girl and boy gingerbreads.” The campaign aims to inform women
to be aware, to be careful when out, to clarify that you don’t have to go home with the person that you’re with. The aim of the campaign is to pro-
mote the view that nobody has the au- thority to take away a woman’s right to say no if she pleases.

couple of weeks, have been hitting the centre of Preston City centre, allowing many to sample dozens of their signature original glazed doughnuts. Krispy Kreme doughnuts were offered
to prospective UCLan students on a re- cent open day at the campus.
