year, and expect an even bigger turnout for the adult ski team this season. Last year’s team was composed of mostly moms and dads of the MAC youth racing program. The season consisted of five races held from January through March. The team raced at all three resorts on Mount Hood and is eyeballing regional races in the years to come. The goal this year is to field at least two 10-person PACRAT teams from MAC. For more than 25 years, PACRAT Racing (Pacific Northwest Area Clubs Recreational Alpine Teams) has offered adult ski club members from the various Portland area ski clubs an exciting and fun opportunity to participate in recreational alpine racing on Mount Hood. The race is a NASTAR format on a dual course. The courses are set up so beginners can easily race and at the same time provide a challenging run for advanced skiers. PACRAT is affiliated with NASTAR and each racer is awarded NASTAR points. Each racer is handicapped after the first race and placed into one of the seven skill levels ranging from novice to elite based on their individual time after completing the course. Throughout the season, each racer strives to better his or her time against other racers in their skill category

Early Birds Breakfast a Holiday Tradition
he Early Birds Annual Christmas Breakfast is full of the best traditions of the holidays: music, gifts, humor, delicious foods, special clothes, family fun and warm fellowship. This year the Christmas Breakfast is served in the MAC Ballroom on Friday, Dec. 16, from 6:30 a.m. until about 7:30 a.m. This cele- bration of the season is open to all early exercisers and their families and is a great way to start the week before Christmas. A full breakfast buffet for just $10, including gratuity, may be conveniently charged to members’ accounts. As in earlier years, the ballroom will be decorated with dozens of colorful toys, collected for the children of the YWCA’s Yolanda House, a safe and welcoming shelter for mothers and children escaping domestic violence. These toys, along with toiletries
T
for the moms and a check from the proceeds of the Early Bird Thanksgiving Turkey Trot raffle, is given to representatives from the YWCA at the breakfast. Other special features of the Early Bird Christmas
Breakfast include holiday music, a Fashion Show of Columbia Sportswear’s latest sports and fashion clothing designs, door prizes, and recognition of Mr. and Ms. Early Bird 2011. Early Birds are collecting donations of unwrapped toys for
the Yolanda House children and toiletries for their moms in a barrel near the Athletic Entrance. The Early Bird Committee is very grateful to MAC members for supporting this worthy cause, and we look forward to seeing members at the Christmas Breakfast. WM
