ATHL E TI C S

It was a particularly long snow season, interrupted early in the year by a warm spell with rain. Then that late season snow came, some of which never melted. As a result, there were 25 snowshoe outings, the most ever scheduled.

Destination hikers had several multiday outings, including the Rogue River Trail, Central Oregon trails, and hikes on Mount Adams and Mount Rainier. Walkers and hikers used scheduled outings to help train for selected marathons and half marathons, mountain climbs and challenging day hikes with lots of elevation gain. On the other end of the spectrum, there were commu- nity service projects, such as ivy pulls, that offered the satisfaction of participating in a worthy project.

Looking forward to 2012, the committee plans to continue the popular midweek hiking options, add more Saturday hikes, continue Sunday Family Walks, continue evening walks and schedule some exciting destination outings beyond the scope of day hiking. The plan includes snowshoe and cross country ski outings until the snow melts, which could be late if the predictions of La Niña are correct. And, for those who enjoy dreaming about the possibilities and listening to the tales of others, there are great evening presentations planned, including Mount Kilimanjaro, popular author William Sullivan and others. To help members to learn more about the possibilities at MAC, the Walking and Hiking committee invites members to the first ever Walking and Hiking Open House on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 7-9 p.m. Early plans for the event include continuously running slide shows of various adventures and discoveries, displays from past outings and events, information and registration for upcoming events, surveys for members to make suggestions for future offerings, drawings for walking and hiking stuff, walking and hiking enthusiasts on hand to answer questions and share tales from the trail, and lots more. And, because walkers and hikers also like to eat, there are snacks. Come for the information. Come to ask questions. Come to make suggestions. Come to be among the first to register for special events. Come to reconnect with friends, and come to make new ones. WM
